Through Undiscovered Destinations, they joined a 20-day small group Caribbean island-hopping tour, visiting Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad, Curaçao and Aruba.

Travelling between islands was seamless, with regional flights running like clockwork.

As Robert and Kath shared, the real value came from the depth of experience:

Despite being relatively untouched by mass tourism, the region offered both authenticity and comfort.

Ireland in 9 Days: Highlights, Hidden Gems & Travel Tips from the Road

In August 2025, Kate had the chance to experience Ireland on the Cosmos Irish Discovery tour — a nine-day journey across some of the country’s most iconic landscapes, historic cities and charming villages.

If you’re short on time but want to see a lot, tours like this can be a fantastic way to experience Ireland. The pace is fast - expect early mornings and full days - but you’ll cover an incredible amount of ground and see many of the country’s highlights. Cosmos is also a great option for travellers looking for a more budget-friendly tour, although hotels are generally located outside city centres.

That said, if you have the time, we would recommend adding a few extra nights either side of the tour, particularly in Dublin.

Dublin: Culture, History and a Pint with a View

Many tours begin and end in Dublin but don’t allow much time to explore properly. If Dublin is on your list (and it should be), consider extending your stay.

One must-see attraction is the Book of Kells at Trinity College, but tickets must be booked in advance as they sell out quickly.

Another highlight is the Guinness Storehouse, where the Gravity Bar offers panoramic views over Dublin — the perfect place to enjoy a pint.

If you need a break from the lively atmosphere of Temple Bar, the National Gallery of Ireland is just a short walk away and offers a quieter, culturally rich experience.

Belfast: History and Local Stories

In Belfast, we stayed at the Leonardo Hotel, which is centrally located and within easy walking distance of the City Hall, monuments, shopping and restaurants.

The Titanic Experience is a major attraction and worth visiting if you want a deeper understanding of the tragedy and the personal stories connected to it.

Another fascinating experience is taking a guided tour along the Shankill and Falls Roads, where local guides share insights into the history of “The Troubles” and life in Belfast during that period.

For dinner or a drink, Robinson’s Bar is one of Belfast’s oldest pubs. Through the back doors you’ll find Fibber Magee’s, where traditional Irish folk music is played live most nights of the week - a must visit especially if you are a Toowoomba local!

The Giant’s Causeway: Natural Wonder

The Giant’s Causeway is one of Ireland’s most famous natural attractions. If you’re visiting on a tour, consider taking the small shuttle bus from the visitor centre down to the causeway — it costs about £1 and saves time so you can explore the area more thoroughly.

Derry and the Wild Atlantic Way

In Derry/Londonderry, the Guildhall Taphouse is a great stop for a craft beer and a bite to eat, close to the historic city walls and the Peace Bridge.

Further south along the coast, the Cliffs of Moher are spectacular, but my tip is to walk further along the cliffs away from the main viewing platform for quieter viewpoints and beautiful scenery.

Hidden Gems Along the Way

One of my favourite stops was Adare, a charming village known for its historic thatched cottages. It’s the perfect place for a short break between Limerick and Dingle. Grab a takeaway coffee (and perhaps some handmade chocolate) and stroll through the village park.

The seaside town of Dingle was another highlight. While not always on first-time Ireland itineraries, it’s well worth visiting — especially if you’re driving part of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Local favourites include:

Harrington’s for fish and chips
Murphy’s Ice Cream, made with milk from the rare Kerry cattle breed

Killarney and the Ring of Kerry

Killarney is the perfect base for exploring the famous Ring of Kerry, one of Ireland’s most scenic drives.

If you’re self-driving, keep in mind that tour buses travel anti-clockwise. It can actually be helpful to follow behind them — they know the route well and are comfortable navigating the narrow roads.

Along the way, the village of Sneem is a lovely place to stop for lunch, with cafes and pubs overlooking the river.

Back in Killarney, dining highlights include The Laurels Pub for a hearty meal and J.M. Reidy’s, a wonderfully quirky pub with winding rooms and cosy snugs.

You can also explore Killarney National Park by jaunting cart — a traditional horse-drawn carriage — and you may even spot wild red deer.

Final Thoughts

Ireland is a destination full of history, stunning landscapes and warm hospitality. A short tour like this offers a fantastic introduction, but if you have the opportunity, slowing down and spending more time in each destination will allow you to experience even more of what makes the country so special.

And of course, no matter where you go in Ireland, you’re never far from a great pub, live music and a warm welcome.

Peaks of Europe: From the Alps to the Dolomites with Collette

If you’ve ever dreamed of alpine villages, glacier views, storybook towns and unforgettable train journeys — this is the tour that brings it all together.

Nat's recent experience on Collette’s 12-day “Peaks of Europe: The Alps to the Dolomites” tour was nothing short of spectacular. Spanning France, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein and Italy, this journey showcases some of Europe’s most breathtaking mountain landscapes — with immersive cultural experiences woven throughout.

Chamonix, France

Arriving via Geneva, Nat transferred to the stunning alpine town of Chamonix and settled into La Folie Douce Hotel. A welcome dinner set the tone for the journey ahead.

A highlight was visiting the Montenvers site at 1,913 metres above sea level to view the Mer de Glace glacier. Despite weather changes, the journey through the mountains — whether by gondola or railway — offered unforgettable views of Les Drus and the Grandes Jorasses. And of course, no visit to Chamonix is complete without stopping at Aux Petits Gourmands for a sweet treat.

Nat also explored the charming canals and cobblestone streets of Annecy, with a guided walking tour leading the group through Old Town to the historic Château d’Annecy.

Switzerland: Gstaad & Grindelwald

Crossing into Switzerland, we visited Barryland in Martigny — dedicated to the iconic St Bernard dogs — before enjoying lunch in Montreux and boarding the scenic Golden Pass Train to Gstaad.

In Grindelwald, we journeyed to Jungfraujoch — the “Top of Europe.” Even with a change in route due to weather, travelling via Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfrau Railway provided extraordinary views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. Exploring the Ice Palace and standing among Europe’s highest railway station views was a true bucket-list moment.

A visit to a local farm producing Raclette cheese added a deliciously authentic touch.

Austria: Seefeld & Innsbruck

Lucerne’s lakeside beauty and chocolate shops made for a picturesque stop before heading through Liechtenstein and into Seefeld.

One of the most memorable inclusions? A horse-drawn carriage ride through Seefeld’s forests and mountain landscapes — peaceful, scenic and incredibly special.

In Innsbruck, we toured Wilten Basilica and the Bergisel Ski Jump before enjoying time in the charming Old Town along the river.

Italy: The Dolomites & Prosecco Region

Italy welcomed us with dramatic Dolomite scenery — a UNESCO World Heritage area. A gondola ride to the summit of Sass Pordoi delivered panoramic mountain views that are simply impossible to capture in photos.

We were warmly welcomed into a local farmhouse for a traditional lunch — a true highlight of the tour.

The journey continued to Cortina (host city of the 2026 Winter Olympics) before heading into the Prosecco region for vineyard tastings and lunch.

Our final evening was spent at an 18th-century Venetian villa in Mogliano Veneto, celebrating with a group farewell dinner — the perfect end to an unforgettable journey.

Kate has recently returned from the Philippines and has been left wondering why more people don’t think about the Philippines when thinking of a beach break in Asia or the Pacific?!

Clear blue water? ✔️

White sand beaches? ✔️

Friendly locals and an interesting culture? ✔️

Delicious food? ✔️

The Philippines offers so much to discover. From breathtaking natural wonders to vibrant cultural experiences, it’s a destination that ticks all the boxes.

During our visit, we explored a range of incredible spots. While some adventures—like the Giant Clam Sanctuary at Samal Island, the Moalboal Sardine Run, and the stunning Kawasan Falls—require a bit of travel and are best included in a longer itinerary, others, such as the charming Siargao Island, are more accessible and absolutely worth the trip.

Siargao is a wonderfully relaxed alternative to destinations like Thailand, Bali, and even Fiji—though it does require a longer flight than the latter two. With its white sand beaches, world-famous surf breaks, island-hopping adventures through crystal-clear waters, cooking classes, and jaw-dropping views, Siargao truly has something for everyone. We stayed at the Siargao Beach Resort , ideally located right on the beach in General Luna. It’s within easy walking or trike-riding distance to all the action in town. The resort offers spacious, comfortable rooms perfect for families, a gorgeous pool area with poolside dining and a bar, plenty of sun loungers, and a spa offering affordable treatments to help you slip into full relaxation mode.

And let’s talk about the food—prepare your stretchy pants! The Philippines is a nation of hospitality, and Siargao is no exception. Dining options here are abundant, varied, and incredibly affordable. We tried standout spots like La Mesa, Kermit, Harana, Las Palmas, and Sausalito Siargao at Trogan’s Perch Resort, which boasts stunning views across the water. Every meal was a delight, with something to suit every palate.

Siargao pairs perfectly with a trip to either Bohol or Palawan (both of which are high on my must-visit list). Since getting to Siargao involves transiting through Manila, I’d also recommend spending a day or two exploring the capital. From the buzzing rooftop bars and world-class shopping malls of Makati to the historic charm of Intramuros, Manila offers a little bit of everything.

My visit to the Philippines was an incredible experience, and I’m already planning my return. There’s always something new to see and explore in this captivating destination.

When deciding on our next holiday destination, our must-haves as a family included tropical sunshine, relaxation, and a touch of culture, all within a short flight from Australia.

We had a wonderful experience in Fiji in 2014 when our son was 2, so we wanted a similar hospitable experience but somewhere new. We chose the Cook Islands, with Jetstar offering a direct six-hour flight from Sydney to Rarotonga. The pure beauty of the Cook Islands, seen in online images, always drew me in, so when I found frequent flyer flights available during the school holidays, I jumped on it!

As a travel agent, I love researching and finding the best resorts that suit the needs of my clients – and in this case, my own family! Needs vary greatly for those travelling with children versus those without. I had heard the Muri Lagoon area was beautiful and well-protected from the winds, which the Cook Islands are well known for. After exploring several resorts in the area, we settled on The Pacific. It’s not a large resort, but it offers various room options perfect for families. We chose the Family Garden Room, which had a separate bedroom and another bed in the main living area – spacious and ideal for our needs.

The resort has a relaxed vibe, offers a daily tropical breakfast included in the room rate, and features a restaurant, Sandals, with beautiful food and the Barefoot Cafe & Bar right on the beachfront. Dining at Sandals on our first night, we found the food delicious and rated it highly.

What we loved most was the complimentary kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and snorkeling gear available to hotel guests. My 12-year-old son loves to keep busy and explore, so we invested in a cheap fishing line from a local store, and he had the best holiday ever! The island is surrounded by reefs perfect for snorkeling, but the area in front of The Pacific boasts beautiful sand and crystal-clear water – truly paradise. I had to keep pinching myself that this was our new normal for the next week!

Things to Do:

Hire a Car: Explore the island at your own pace. We loved the freedom, and the drive around the entire island takes about 45 minutes at 50 km/h.
Deep Sea Fishing: If you’re a keen fisherman, this is the place to be. My husband and son chose Akura and had a fabulous morning, catching yellowfin tuna. We took the catch to Vaianas, just out of the main town, where they cooked it up for us with chips and salad and served some as sashimi – a fantastic lunch right after the fishing trip.
Day Spa: While the boys fished, I visited Ocean Escape Spa. The Balinese massage therapists were amazing. I had a 75-minute massage followed by a facial – pure bliss.
Day Trip to Aitutaki: Unfortunately, we missed this due to bad weather, but it’s a must-do for ultimate paradise.
Sunset on the West Coast: We enjoyed drinks at On the Beach – stunning views and a lovely dinner spot.
Best Coffee: Beluga, a little café on the west coast, offered the best coffee and a great breakfast.
Trader Jacks in Town: Perfect for happy hour drinks on the water or a delicious meal. We loved the seafood pasta and sashimi.
Muri Night Markets: Held on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights near our hotel, these markets had a great vibe with local music and various food stalls. The BBQ prawn skewers with coconut rice and salad were delicious.
Snorkeling on the West Coast: Near the Rarotongan Resort, the reefs here boast a beautiful array of colorful fish.

Overall, we loved our week in paradise. The relaxed island lifestyle is infectious – even the dogs are calm and chilled like the locals!

If you’re after a tropical holiday with an island feel but without the high prices of Fiji, consider the beautiful Cook Islands.

South Africa Beach and Bush Adventure

There’s always the danger when you embark on an iconic adventure that the reality won’t match the buildup. That seeing the Big Five whilst on safari, roaming free in the wild, won’t be any more thrilling than seeing them safely confined in one of today’s modern, free range zoos. Let me put that fear to rest right here, right now.

It. Is. Not. The same.

But let’s not rush ahead, because there’s more to South Africa than just the, admittedly fabulous, wildlife experiences. When I travel I have a few basic essentials – immersive culture, one-of-a-kind accommodation, spectacular landscapes, friendly locals offering top notch service, meals to delight the taste buds, a cocktail or three and a great beach doesn’t go astray. South Africa didn’t disappoint.

After a night at the very conveniently located City Lodge O.R. Tambo International Airport (got to love an airport hotel you can walk to via a covered walkway from the terminal) we flew to Durban with SA Airlink who served what had to be one of the best inflight snacks I’ve ever encountered. Fresh Krispy Kreme donuts were the perfect option for morning tea and we gobbled them up.

Arriving at The Oyster Box hotel majestically located overlooking the Indian Ocean at Umhlanga we knew we were in for something special when our driver and guide pointed out the Zulu King’s car parked adjacent to the port cochere.

All thoughts of royalty fled when we stepped into the lovingly restored lobby redolent with the delicate scent of lemongrass. Every detail at The Oyster Box is perfection, from the elegant finishes and décor details, the guests only Clock Library and cinema, the warm and friendly service, the impressive and famous curry buffet down to the most minute of touches such as the embroidered slippers in our rooms and every aspect in between.

Whilst enjoying a Durban speciality curry, the intriguingly named Bunny Chow, and carefully curated cocktails under the jaunty red and white stripped umbrellas of the Ocean Terrace and sampling sundowners of local South African gins in the Lighthouse Bar were definite highlights, the opportunity to Travel with Purpose and donate to the Pack for a Purpose project which supports the LIV village in Durban was an emotionally satisfying moment of community connection. LIV Durban places vulnerable and orphaned children into a family environment where they receive unconditional love, care and nurturing.

As tempting as we would have found it to do nothing but enjoy the hospitality of The Oyster Box we found several other things in Umhlanga to lure us from its welcoming embrace. One being the fantastic Signature Restaurant at Oceans Mall (also a top spot for some high end shopping if that’s your thing) where we enjoyed an amazing meal. Signature with its diverse menu catering to a variety of tastes, elegant décor and ambience created by talented live musical performers is the perfect spot for a romantic meal for two or, as in our case, celebration dinner for twelve. A walk the following morning along the Umhlanga Rocks Promenade, not forgetting to take a photo or two of the iconic Umhlanga Lighthouse, was the perfect way to work off the excess calories after sampling all of the delicious food and drink options at both Signature and The Oyster Box.

It was with profound sadness that we bid farewell to The Oyster Box and its resident cat Skabenga, an elegant tabby gentleman, and piled into our transfer vehicle for trip north to our next stop. We were on our way to Thonga Beach Lodge in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

After transferring to a couple of four-wheel drive vehicles at Sodwana Bay we drove along dirt and sand roads through coastal forests and farmland along the edge of South Africa’s largest freshwater lake Lake Sibaya before eventually, upon reaching the crest of a hill, we gazed down at our destination perched at the edge of the dunes along an endless wide, sandy beach. Even through the not so perfect, rainy weather it looked like a wild paradise.

The lodge is a series of pavilions including a dining room, bar, lounge with board games and snacks and accommodation cabins linked via boardwalks through a lush forest setting including a spacious pool area and intimate fire pit. The rooms with their mosquito net swathed beds, natural décor, rush ceilings and walls, and double doors opening onto small decks welcoming in the sounds of the ocean were everything I’d expect from a beach lodge and more.

Thonga Beach Lodge offers a range of land and water based activities including fat bike rides to ride along the kilometres of beach, the Open Ocean Experience a ‘safari at sea’ and, at the right time of year, the Turtle Tracking Experience a chance to witness turtles laying their eggs early in the season or the emerging hatchlings later in the season and support turtle conservation. The weather was not our friend when it came to sampling some of these options.

We were lucky to visit to the local village, Mabibi, where we heard tales of the local Zulu culture and had the privilege of visiting the local primary school which receives support through donations from Thonga Beach Lodge and its guests via the Isibindi Foundation. On our way into the village we had a close encounter with some native wildlife, in our opinion a large Golden Orb spider dropped terrifyingly in our open safari truck, if you asked the spider he’d tell you that we very rudely drove into his web and nearly deafened him with our screams when all he wanted to do was escape.

Before our departure the sun broke through the clouds in time for us to enjoy an invigorating kayak paddle on Lake Sibaya before we were back on the road in our 4WD’s to Sodwana Bay to meet our mini-bus and continue on to our next destination, Sungalwane Private Game Lodge.

Sungalwane is situated in the North Western part of Zuka Private Game Reserve and forms part of the Mun-Ya-Wana Conservancy. This incredibly diverse conservation area boasts over 31,000 ha of unspoiled wilderness and borders the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

From the moment we passed through the Mun-Ya-Wana gate excitement was high. When would we see our first animals that weren’t cows (an animal we had already seen in great numbers and with a strong social significance in KwaZulu-Natal) and what would it be? FYI, it was a giraffe off in the far distance and I’ll be honest, I couldn’t pick it. The first recognisable animal we saw was a Warthog greeted by a chorus of “Pumba!” from inside the mini-bus as he trotted along the side of the road. He was absolutely not the last animal we saw and our next sighting came very shortly after our arrival at our lodge.

Driving through the lodge entrance it wasn’t hard to notice that there was no gate or fences between the lodge and the game reserve at large. The question begged to be asked, is it possible for wildlife to access the lodge and its grounds? The question was soon answered when, after being greeted by our safari guides and lodge staff, we passed through the double doors into the main lodge building and spotted Nyala (a type of antelope) grazing in the grassy area just beyond the pool. Yes, all the game can access the lodge except, probably, the elephants (and sometimes an elephant’s gotta do what an elephant’s gotta do).

The main lodge building is a stunning open-plan pavilion, and by open plan it is literally open on one side to landscape, decorated in what can be best described as African chic. After consuming the first of several superb meals, we followed the path up the hill behind the lodge to our rooms, each of them a private, individual cabin with an expansive floor plan, huge floor to ceiling windows and sliding doors and a large deck perfect for enjoying the natural surroundings. In the large bathroom the huge shower was bordered on two sides with glass – on one side a massive pane of glass overlooking the bush and on the other a sliding door to a secluded deck area with an outdoor area, safe from all prying eyes other than the occasional curious Nyala.

After a few minutes to soak up the atmosphere it was time to prepare for afternoon tea and our first game drive. Having never been on safari previously I had no idea what to expect – maybe a bit of a drive around where we might see some animals? After all, we’d just driven through the reserve all the way from the gates to the lodge and had really only seen animals from a distance. I was pretty certain that it would be a lovely afternoon but would it be amazing? I wasn’t so sure.

I’m a big enough person to admit when I’m wrong, and boy was I wrong! It wasn’t just lovely, it wasn’t just amazing, the entire experience was spectacular. On our three game drives overall not only did we drive through a landscape with some of the loveliest vistas I’ve ever seen but we had some of the most intimate and special wildlife encounters imaginable. The Big 5. We saw them - lion, rhino, elephant, buffalo and leopard, well, we didn’t see the elusive leopard but we tried.

How can you describe turning a corner to find a group of giraffes calmly plucking the leaves from trees, or a couple of zebras staring you down from the middle of the track? And the lions . . . I’ve seen lions in zoos but nothing can compare to the feeling of driving along a bush track in an open 4WD and arriving at a lakeside clearing to the sight of a lioness and her three cubs lounging in a fallen tree before they proceeded to feast on the carcass of their prey, not to mention the sight and sound of an irritated elephant strenuously objecting to the lion cubs’ noisy appreciation of their meal. As if our encounter with the lions wasn’t enough, at another location we were treated to the sight of three cheetah brothers enjoying their own meal in a far more delicate fashion only metres from our vehicle.

Aside from the spectacular landscapes, amazing game sightings and outstanding cuisine one of the best things about spending time at a game lodge is how relaxing it is. Between morning and afternoon game drives our time was free to watch, from either the pool or the several comfortable lodge seating areas, the game grazing and approaching the small waterhole. After our afternoon game drive evenings were spent in the lodge enjoying drinks around the fire pit before another top notch meal or we moved to the boma (traditionally used as a stock enclosure) for a fire and a wonderful braai (barbeque) meal.

Leaving Sungalwane was tough, particularly with the farewell guard of giraffes at the side of the road as we drove away from the lodge. The landscapes, wildlife and people of Sungalwane provided experiences that will live on my memories for a lifetime.

After a flight and another night in Johannesburg at the excellently located Peermont D’oreale Grand hotel with its excellent Reign bar and restaurant, we travelled down to Sun City Resort and our next hotel, The Palace of the Lost City.

Wow. When they call it a palace they mean a palace! I would not have been surprised to find King Jaffe Joffer, Queen Aoleon and Prince Akeem waiting inside to greet us. And if you’re not up on your 80’s film references (Coming to America) you may recognise the hotel from the movie Blended.

Sun City is a purpose built resort with multiple hotel options and a multitude of activities and facilities including shopping, the Valley of the Waves waterpark, two world class golf courses, nightlife and entertainment, outdoor adventure activities including quadbikes and Segway tours, a casino and several safari options in the Pilanesberg National Park including a hot air balloon experience. It’s a very popular destination with both international and local visitors for a fun filled family getaway.

After a couple of days exploring all that Sun City had to offer including cocktails by the pool, a game drive and another magnificent sunset we travelled the two hours back to Johannesburg and our final hotel of our stay, the DaVinci Hotel Sandton.

The DaVinci was the perfect spot to catch up on last minute souvenir shopping with its location right next to Nelson Mandela Square and the Sandton City shopping centre and only a short Uber ride to our farewell meal at Marble Restaurant in Rosebank.

Marble is a perfectly situated rooftop restaurant and bar with magnificent sunset views and an extensive menu of locally sourced produce and signature meat cuts accompanied by a wine list chock full of South African wine gems. Our evening of hand crafted cocktails at sunset followed by a meal exploring the food and wine options on offer was the perfect (and surprisingly affordable) way to end our trip.

How do I sum up our expedition into some South Africa’s lesser known gems and more well-known crowd pleasers?

Fantastic food and wine, jaw-dropping wildlife experiences, world class lodges and hotels, immersive culture and a people that were warm and welcoming.

And one memorable interaction with a spider.

South Africa I’ll be back, just try and keep me away.

South Korea Adventure

Jason and Charles are avid travellers but had never explored the Republic of Korea before. Having always wanted to visit, they reached out to Laura to create the perfect itinerary for them.

Their South Korea adventure took place in November 2023. Flying directly into Seoul, Jason and Charles embarked on an introductory journey through a small part of the fascinating country. Laura had prepared an itinerary that would provide a good taste of what Korea has to offer!

Three cities made the list: Seoul, Gyeongju and Busan - these were chosen so that the adventurers could experience a range of iconic Korean destinations. Jason and Charles described Seoul is a massive bustling metropolis, Gyeongju a traditional smaller town boasting over 1000 years of Silla heritage, and Busan a seaside city known for its beaches, mountains and temples.

Highlights included the Han River Sunset Cruise, Guided Tour Of Busan and the evening Ultimate Korean Barbeque Tour.

Charles said ‘everything was expertly arranged including the airport pick-up, day tours and the evening experiences. Which only means one thing, we have to go back now and see more of this beautiful country!’

Virgin Voyages Preview Cruise - December 2023

In early December three of the Toowoomba Cruise and Travel team and their partners were lucky enough to sail on the fabulous Virgin Voyages ship the Resilient Lady on a two night travel industry preview sailing from Sydney to Melbourne.

How did we like it? We loved it!

During a very efficient check in process ringing out with cries of “Ahoy sailors!” and “Welcome sailors!” we each received ‘The Band’ – the Virgin Voyages answer to a room key and method of making onboard purchases. We were buzzing with excitement and feeling like rockstars as we stepped onto the ship ready to explore.

Here’s the rundown:

Cabins – We were all lucky enough to have Sea Terrace (balcony) cabins. Our thoughts, they’re light, bright and stylish simple with a subtle modern nautical feel. The hammocks on the generous balconies are a fun and quirky touch. The bathrooms are small but functional with a good sized shower.

Public areas and bars – There’s something for everyone and every occasion. Each area of the ship has a different feel and identity. Some are more relaxed and casual, others have an air of quiet sophistication, and others have a more glamourous vibe. There are intimate spaces for a quiet conversation or more expansive spots to meet as a group and join the crowd. There are plenty of options inside, or out on deck - you can find your niche. If you want to feel like every time you leave your cabin you’re heading out to a fantastic new venue, or an old favourite in the same way you would on a land based holiday, this is the ship for you. Our suggestion, make sure you load up your ‘Bar Tab’ prior to sailing and enjoy a sundowner at ‘The Dock’, an alfresco Mediterranean inspired bar and lounge area on deck 7.

Shops and services – If splashing the cash is your idea of fun there are several high end shopping options as well as some fantastic Virgin Voyages merchandise available. Want to return to land feeling like a fresh new you? There’s a hairdresser, barber, spa and, for a more permanent reminder of your trip, a tattoo studio. Our tip, don’t forget prices are in US dollars on board.

Entertainment – The entertainment options are as relaxed or high energy as you like. On a two night cruise we only had the opportunity to see one show, Persephone – it was quite different to anything we’d ever seen at sea before. Instead of theatre style seating, the audience was on their feet and immersed in the experience with the performers on smaller stages and catwalks throughout the ‘Red Room’. ‘The Manor’ nightclub has a glamourous and moody vibe with a large dancefloor, comfy nooks for late night conversations and a social media worthy illuminated entrance. The 80’s music playing on the first night was a floor filler and the pop up, interactive performances by dancers and drag performers amped up the party atmosphere. Other venue’s onboard offer live music from DJ’s, bands, duo and solo performers throughout the day and evening. There’s also the opportunity to take the performance out of the hands of the professionals and take the mike in your own hands in either a private karaoke room in ‘The Groupie’ or at a hosted karaoke session in ‘The Social Club’, a venue that also offers video games, board games and one of our favourites, a shuffleboard table.

Health and Wellness – Juice bars, group fitness classes, outdoor yoga at ‘The Perch’, indoor and outdoor gyms and exercise spaces and a running track there’s no reason that your body can’t be, like Bernie’s, a temple.

Our favourite thing?

The food. The food. THE FOOD!

Two nights was not long enough for us to eat everywhere we wanted to, but we gave it a shot! We ate elevated Mexican at ‘Pink Agave’, daily fresh pasta at ‘Extra Virgin’, succulent steak and seafood at ‘The Wake’ and a multitude of freshly cooked delights for lunch, breakfast and any time in between at ‘The Galley’. Oh, and let’s not forget the ice-cream . . . and the pretzels . . . and the pizza and . . . and . . . and . . . Let’s just say we all started our diets this week.

Our least favourite thing?

That bad weather meant that the ‘Scarlet Night’ poolside celebration had to be relocated from the open deck down to the ‘Red Room’.

Is Virgin Voyages for everyone? Probably not, nothing ever is.

Is it for those who are young of mind and spirit who want to experience excellent cuisine, innovative entertainment and a laid back, convivial atmosphere? Absolutely!

Will we cruise with them again? Someone needs to test out the dining options we missed out on!

With the shorter itineraries available in the Australian season it’s the ideal opportunity to see if Virgin Voyages is for you.

Celebrity Cruising in the British Isles

In May 2023 Brenda and I embarked on a cruising adventure around the British Isles from Rotterdam in the Netherlands, a city worth taking a little extra time to explore if you have the chance. Whilst excited to visit ports and cities that were new to us, we were most excited to explore our home for the next eleven nights – Celebrity Cruises’ magnificent new Celebrity Edge. Stepping on board our first thoughts were ‘Wow’! We’ve cruised with Celebrity before but this ship had taken elegance and luxury to another level, everywhere we looked was another carefully crafted detail. The public spaces were a terrific mix of open space to meet new friends and intimate nooks for private conversation, it never felt like we were in a crowd, something that will ease the concern for those concerned about big ship cruising.

Our Aqua Class Infinite Balcony with its designer finishes and cunning use of space was more than we could have hoped for. Who wouldn’t love the way we were able to bring the outdoors in and enjoy the sea breezes with the clever push of a button allowing the window to descend and create a balcony rail? No squeezing onto an exterior balcony for us! With the Aqua Class inclusions of complimentary fitness classes, unlimited access to the SEA Thermal suite, a personal spa concierge and complimentary dining at Blu restaurant with its spa-inspired clean-eating cuisine, it was like a wellness break at sea.

Of course, anyone who knows me knows that while my body might be a temple, sometimes it’s a temple to Bacchus the god of wine and revelry - Celebrity Edge gave plenty of opportunities to indulge. Twenty-nine bars, restaurants and lounges offered up something for every taste from the four different main dining restaurants offering modern American, French, Mediterranean inspired seafood and southern Italian cuisines, to casual and al fresco café style options across various decks and areas of the ship, to poolside burgers, salads and sandwiches. To our delight, those were just the options included in our fare. In addition there was also eight different speciality dining options, at a small additional charge, offered something extra for a special occasion or simply a truly magical night at sea, we sampled the steakhouse for a delicious change of pace.

What is dinner without a pre-dinner drink? There’s a bar for every taste and part of the joy of the ship was exploring them all, but we found our favourite to be the Eden bar, an expansive space across three levels with a panoramic view through multi-story high glass windows across the stern of the ship. After dinner world class entertainment across multiple venues kept us amused until late into the night.

With all this to explore on board it was a wonder that we found time to go ashore, but go ashore we did. In Dover we took an excursion into London with all the celebratory bunting and decorations from the recent coronation still very much in evidence, it was our chance to feel like part of history. We experienced a different type of history in Liverpool where the ship docked almost in the middle of the city. Stepping ashore we were greeted by a statue of the ‘Fab Four’ The Beatles. After moving on to the Cavern Club, the site of some of their earliest gigs, I offered to give a performance of my own, strangely no one took me up on the offer. Visiting the Titanic Museum in Belfast offered us a new insight into that ill-fated voyage, one that was such a contrast to ours. And what trip to Ireland, the home of the craic, would be complete without a trip to the pub? In Cobh the train to the centre of Cork, a town offering a mighty choice of drinking establishments, conveniently left from the port and we were on it.

Bad weather meant that it wasn’t possible to call at the Shetland Isles but Celebrity was up to the challenge, a change of port to Inverness along with a variety of new shore excursion options was a welcome surprise.

I’ve cruised on many ships over many years and to find the reception desk largely absent of guests requiring assistance on a ship the size of the Edge is an achievement that is a credit to how well run and organised the team on board, and Celebrity as a whole, is.

Long after Brenda and I disembarked and continued on our adventures through Europe, the warmth and good times from our cruise on the Celebrity Edge stayed with us.

In short, our time cruising with Celebrity Cruises left us feeling like celebrities!

The Sleba Sisters Italian Adventure

Sleba Sisters' Italian Adventure

It was an absolute delight to organise this extraordinary journey for the Fabulous Four Sleba Sisters. Geraldine's captivating daily Facebook updates made us feel like we were right there with them. So, sit back, grab a coffee, and embark on a virtual tour of Italy with the Sleba Sisters!

Day 1

Rosi and I were on our own today, so made the most of exploring the Lombardy region of Milan. So much history, so much style, beautifully dressed women and men who wear aftershave! The gothic spires of the Duomo were resplendent with the shimmer of the morning sun as we headed out early to avoid the crowds. We were on a mission to find the Wagner food market and they did not disappoint! My second trip to Italy started with fresh ripe tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, olive oil and ciabatta bread almost 20 years ago. We savoured similar today… so yummy lucky we pounded the footpath a lot! Tom did caution me to pace myself, as it is only day 1. You know that food was always going to be my focus in Italy… just warning you, that my posts will always include food and most likely fashion, my great loves. The elegant shops, Porta Nuova, a glimpse of Sporza castle and the galleria were notable amongst the impressive architecture that is on every street we ambled. I could not help myself at the food markets and purchased ingredients to cook my own pasta back at the apartment… fresh pesto tagliatelle with parmigiana … truly amazing Angela and Madonna are but hours away…. We cannot wait to share the next days … we are truly grateful.

Day 2

All the girls are together; today we focused on The Duomo. The only gothic cathedral in Milan. Today is Sunday, so we headed off to church. We climbed 463 steps to the roof of the Duomo, which allowed us to see the majestic lines of a truly magnificent church and the panorama of a resplendent Milan. Those Italian forebears were amazing in their design and engineering to create such majesty. We were lucky enough to be present for mass and heard the voices of a soloist in splendour. Our thoughts were with our family…. We prayed for those still with us, and those who have gone before us. We lit candles and shed tears, but acknowledged how grateful we are for this wonderful gift. Today our spiritual cup is full. Our physical cup nourished by antipasto, pizza, our first tiramisu gelato and a little bit of wine, the day is not over.

Day 3 & 4

We are visiting the “Pearl of the Lake” Bellagio. As we scampered up the many alleyways that housed beautiful artisan shops offering handmade jewellery, leather and gourmet treats provided us with hours of fabulous shopping and eating. The sisters, plus one were suitably entertained before choosing a spectacular restaurant, “La Dolce Vita”, which fed us with risotto, tortellini, and ragu and seafood pasta.” All washed down with limoncello spritz and Prosecco. The girls were happy. Today we continued our quest to find George Clooney… maybe share a little wine and pasta … but alas, no such luck …. We think we may have seen him fly away in his seaplane! His loss! The ferry transported us to the Lenno, where we visited local markets; on to Menagio where a shoe shop beckoned and proved costly; Verenna was our town of choice to enjoy thin, crispy pizza and aperol spritz. Looking back to Verenna and the Lake afforded us picturesque views of autumn coloured villas dotted along the coastline, standing side by side with Castle’s and majestic churches. We may have sung a little “Here I am Lord” in the church at Lenno that made us sound very good! We have made it our mission to say a prayer asking for rain in every church we visit…the power of prayer Sustained and nourished us made our way back to Bellagio where the jewellery shops scored well! Dinner tonight and off to Milan before we head to Cinque Terre …

Day 5

Goodbye to Bellagio… you have most definitely been our pearl in our travels so far! A quick transfer to Milan Central, with a very handsome Italian driver, set us up for our next episode. On to Cinque Terre …. We navigated our way through a train transfer to head along the coast to Vernazza, one of the 5 centuries old villages that make up the Cinque Terre. The crown jewel among the five. Clinging to the rocks are a patchwork of villas in many colours. fading in the heat, but beautiful nonetheless. The terraces that rise from this tiny village are bountiful with citrus and fresh produce that was being harvested, hopefully to be shared at our table this evening. We reached our 5 Storey villa after climbing a ridiculous number of winding stairs … some of the 4 may not be keen to venture out too often, particularly after a few wines! Our rooftop afforded sea views of the glorious Mediterranean ocean … so blue … so clear…. Perfect for wine and cheese! Angela is keen to trek between the villages..., the others, not so keen! The smell of the sea and the offerings of seafood and Peroni is calling!

Day 6

Cinque Terre continued … Angela and I were our stars today…. Despite all the words of encouragement, the other sisters decided to stay behind and do laundry! They walked from Venazza to Monterosso and from all accounts, while challenging at times proved to be gratifying… with spectacular views and awesome structures. They are surely worthy of an extra scoop of gelato. While they climbed … we explored Vernazza. The church, dedicated to St Marguerite de Antiochia, built in the 13th century, was a peaceful haven to say the rosary together … the beautiful eyes of the Madonna with child, followed our meanderings through the village. The three portable crosses hanging on the walls were carried through the town during religious processions. These are replicas of crosses believed to have been carried on ships on crusades to the Holy Lands. Today we enjoyed the best coffee we have had since being in Italy… the Ii pirata del 5 Terre … fantastic croissants and homemade breakfast focaccia’s… they were superb! A lazy day for some … a day to relax and recharge for the others. Tonight we plan to eat fresh food from the market…. Antipasto is on the menu! Fabulous days…. Fabulous memories with great girls

Day 7

The girls were up and ready to head to Riomaggiore to start a walk back to Corninglia but unfortunately the coastline walk was closed. Not to be deterred we explored the village and savoured the early morning smells and the bustle of shopkeepers displaying their wares. To be immersed in this quaint, eclectic little town is most definitely worth doing! There is something quite special about wandering through such a rich history and folklore. From there we ventured to Manarola where we ambled through the streets to find the harbour dotted with tiny boats in many colours. Amazingly blue water provided a perfect backdrop to the imposing cliffs above. We then headed to Monterosso where we visited two churches … white and black confraternity- the black and white church , The church of St John the Baptist-was impressive , with its use of black and white marble stripes. The Oratory of the Dead was for funerals and to take care of widows, orphans and the shipwrecked. The smiling skulls were to remind us that death is nothing to fear, a little creepy! Cute shops and street artists abounded. We then had a relaxing lunch where we shared bruschetta and Caesar salad and a lemon spritz. Great walking, many laughs and a great appreciation for our beautiful planet earth was realised today.

Day 8

Today we farewelled Cinque Terre… thank you for the magic… our souls are nourished. We were up early to catch the train to Florence, a trio of trains, successful connections, a 20-minute walk from the train to find our apartment, made for a timely arrival in Firenze, which allowed us to begin our exploration. The grandeur and imposing structure of the Duomo was breathtaking as expected. The Medici’s legacy is to be celebrated in this truly remarkable cathedral. The Firenze food markets was bustling and fragrant! Treasures everywhere, tastings and fresh trays were purchased to share. We were lucky enough to be able to celebrate mass together in the Duomo. Missing my boys immensely today, I prayed for them especially. We managed to watch a little of the World Cup rugby while enjoying a cool ale at Michael Collins Irish Pub in Florence. Madonna is salivating at the smell of leather bags and shoes, and no doubt, they will feature heavily in the next few days! We shared a fabulous meal of fresh pasta, crab linguini, Tuscan pork and Risotto…. So good! Finally, we get to eat the best food of Italy!

Day 9

What started as a leisurely morning turned into a marathon of activity! Our first appointment was with “David” at the Academia Gallery … he did not disappoint! The detail and definition that Michel Angelo effected in that block of stone is truly remarkable. Botticelli and others dazzled us with a plethora of religious artwork dating back to the 13th century. No words. Fortuitously, we happened to stumble across some great leather shops right outside the gallery…. The girls were happy to part with their dollars for some great memorabilia to take home! The shopping bug had kicked in, so we zigzagged through alleyways and streets to track down the best bargains in leather bags and jackets. A visit to the leather school provided insights into the construction and design of fabulous leather bags. Very keen to pursue this tomorrow! We topped the day off with a delicious dinner, consisting of the draw card of Florence dining, 500g T bone steaks, which we could not help but gnaw on the bone! So good! There may have been a little wine involved. Weary travellers tonight, early to bed and a sleep in tomorrow. Blessed all of us.

Day 10

Florence is not complete until you visit the Duomo. Today was the day to really immerse ourselves in our Catholic faith. I was reminded of the rich heritage of our Catholic faith, and felt immensely grateful for the values instilled by our parents and the communities of faith in which we have all been supported through our lives. We recognise that the traditions, the structure and the values have been significant in bringing us together on this epic adventure.

The shopping continued today. Ponte Vecchio was our place of choice, bags and gold were the draw cards today. The girls have supported the Florentine people well! Another visit to the food markets for lunch gave us another reason to try many Tuscan foods on offer! Then out for the biggest lemon cello spritz to date and a beautiful dinner where we shared pasta and salad and a little more wine! Such great days in this wonderful country … we have loved our Florence experience.

Day 11

Florence delivered yet again. Today we explored the Uffizi museum where we were fortunate to see the works of Michelangelo, Botticelli and many other artists that have shaped the art world for centuries… it was a real privilege to be able to view such creativity and technique to document the history of this amazing city. It was time to get out of the city and visit the Tuscan countryside. Sienna was our town of choice. As we passed the city wall and headed into the country to explore Sienna and have dinner at a winery… we heaved a big sigh as we embraced the slower pace …As we climbed the narrow streets heading towards the Cathedral which is striped in black and white. The artisans displayed beautiful ceramics, wood and perfume. In addition, of course there was Tuscan food treasures. Every corner is full of gastronomic, cultural and artistic offerings. Tartufo / truffles and the famous pane forte. Sienna is surrounded by a stonewall that is a reminder of its tumultuous history between Firenze and Sienna. We headed to a winery in San Gimighano - “our land our boots “- “Palagetto” for a fabulous dinner with Chianti wine tastings… the freshness of the local produce and the San giovese extraction was amazing, very weary sisters today!

Day 12

Today was our last day in Florence, so we had to finalise our purchases and say another prayer for rain. We discovered the culinary cooking training school and enjoyed a beautiful lunch of fresh gourmet sandwiches, passion fruit pana cotta and mixed berry cheesecake … it was seriously one of our favourite food experiences. I was offered a job on the spot to come and teach cooking in Italy. My eyes lit up and I certainly considered it! What an amazing opportunity. Today we made the trek up the hill to Pizzale Michelangelo to see the replica of David and watch the sun set over Florence. Spectacular! We finished our Florence experience with the most beautiful dinner where we tasted salmon, seafood risotto and rare sirloin with caramelised onion and roast potatoes… superb. The waiter loved us a lot and was happy to provide us with beautiful wine and tiramisu … an Italian who really appreciated four beautiful women! Farewell Florence, you have been delightful!

Day 13

We are in Roma, along the shores of the Tiber River in the Lazio region. An express train, which reached speeds of 248km, took us from Florence to Rome via the varied countryside to arrive at lunchtime. A 20-minute walk navigating the cobblestone streets saw us arrive out very fancy apartment - our favourite place to stay during the tour. Despite the fact that we were all exhausted, we headed out and walked across the Park of Colle Oppio to run straight into the Colosseum. The history is everywhere. The ancient ruins are a reminder of the torrid times that have shaped this vibrant city. We continued our trek around the Vittoriano onto Trastevere to find some more great food. We are suitably rewarded. The girls retired to bed in preparation for a very big day tomorrow.

Day 14

The rich heritage of our Catholic faith was celebrated today as we visited the Vatican Museum and St Peters Basilica. The sisters set off early to beat the crowds and immerse ourselves in the history abounding. The elements of design are evident in every facet of the buildings and the artwork they house. The grandeur and beauty of “The Madonna della Pietà “ informally known as La Pietà, defined the work of Michelangelo. As a 24 year old, he was truly inspired. The Sistine Chapel in all its glory- the ceiling frescos - an absolute masterpiece painted by Michelangelo- 4 years of dedication that truly demonstrates a deep understanding of the bible and the teachings of Jesus . It seems a little surreal… to be somehow bound in this faith story is definitely a blessing. It was worth lining up for the opportunity to experience the peace of this very special place. The drama of the guards, the reverence of the crowd and the commitment of so many dazzled us. Notable in the square was the sculpture of The "Angels Unaware" boat by Canadian artist Timothy P. Schmalz that depicts 140 migrants, ranging from a Jewish man escaping Nazi Germany to a Syrian refugee fleeing the civil war- in accordance with Pope Francis message - “That is why it is not just about migrants. When we show concern for them, we also show concern for ourselves, for everyone; in taking care of them, we all grow; in listening to them, we also give voice to a part of ourselves that we may keep hidden because it is not well regarded nowadays.” Very moving for us all… as we remembered our migrant heritage. We shared homemade pasta today … the smell of garlic permeated the whole apartment - lucky we are in Italy!

Day 15

Our holiday is ending. On our last day we walked to the Trevi Fountain - It is one of the most recognisable monuments in the world, with beautifully designed water fountains amidst stunning sculptures. Renowned for its coin throwing tradition! It is said if you throw a coin from your right hand over your left shoulder into the fountain, it will ensure your return to Rome one day - naturally, we complied! From here we trekked to the ‘Spanish steps’ built in Rococo style between 1723 and 1726 - the steps that lead from the Piazza di Spagna square to the French monastery church Trinita dei Monti (built between 1502–1587). There are 135 steps and 3 different terraces, referring to the Holy Trinity (the Trinità). The top of the stairs near the Egyptian obelisk offered an amazing view of the city. Home for a simple Italian bruschetta - fantastic! Our last night in Italy demands a celebratory dinner and Aperol spritz- some of the best pasta, Roman chicken and reds to share. Tonight was the first night that I just could not fit another morsel! Thanks for the best holiday sisters of mine. It was the most special time together, we are blessed. All of us are very strong, capable women independently. However, together we are a magical force that are bound by love. Thanks to our men who have enabled us to have this time together. We are grateful; we are lucky and we cannot wait to come home and have big cuddles Arrivederci …Day 1 - Sisters in Italy- Rosi and I were on our own today, so made the most of exploring the Lombardy region of Milan. So much history, so much style, beautifully dressed women and men who wear aftershave! The gothic spires of the Duomo were resplendent with the shimmer of the morning sun as we headed out early to avoid the crowds. We were on a mission to find the Wagner food market and they did not disappoint! My second trip to Italy started with fresh ripe tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, olive oil and ciabatta bread almost 20 years ago. We savoured similar today… so yummy lucky we pounded the footpath a lot! Tom did caution me to pace myself, as it is only day 1. You know that food was always going to be my focus in Italy… just warning you, that my posts will always include food and most likely fashion, my great loves. The elegant shops, Porta Nuova, a glimpse of Sporza castle and the galleria were notable amongst the impressive architecture that is on every street we ambled. I could not help myself at the food markets and purchased ingredients to cook my own pasta back at the apartment… fresh pesto tagliatelle with parmigiana … truly amazing Angela and Madonna are but hours away…. We cannot wait to share the next days … we are truly grateful.

Thanks for the best holiday sisters of mine. It was the most special time together, we are blessed. All of us are very strong, capable women independently. However, together we are a magical force that are bound by love. Thanks to our men who have enabled us to have this time together. 3 Day P&O Comedy Cruise

We recently embarked on an unforgettable trip, celebrating multiple milestone birthdays during the King's Birthday long weekend. With a 60th, 21st, and 18th birthday all converging on one unforgettable voyage, our cruise was filled with the energy of different generations coming together for a special occasion.

Our adventure began at the new Brisbane International Port, where we found hassle-free parking at Wilson Parking (P2). A mere 5-minute walk to the terminal added to the convenience, allowing us to focus on the exciting moments that lay ahead. Efficient check-in processes are always a welcome sight, and within just 30 minutes of arriving at the terminal, we were on board, setting the stage for a smooth start to our cruise experience.

Throughout the cruise, a myriad of activities and amenities awaited our group. From exploring the ship's various corners to enjoying onboard entertainment or simply unwinding by the pool, the cruise proved to be the perfect choice for our special occasion. Opting for an inside cabin for this short cruise was a great decision. The subdued lighting in these cabins provided the perfect setting for a leisurely sleep-in or an afternoon nap. For longer cruises, upgrading to an ocean view or balcony cabin might be worth considering.

Planning our dining experiences in advance allowed us to savour specialty dining options. Here's a breakdown of our culinary journey:

1. The Pantry (Deck 12): Casual dining at its finest, offering a quick and relaxed meal with a variety of options to suit different tastes.

2. The Waterfront: Perfect for a formal breakfast setting, The Waterfront impressed with its varied menu and attentive service.

3. Angelo's (Italian): A delightful Italian dining experience with classic dishes served in an upscale ambiance. Our favourite culinary experience on board.

4. Dragon Lady (Asian Fusion): An exploration of flavours and dishes from diverse Asian cuisines, a must-try for those with a penchant for culinary adventure.

5. Waterfront (Group Celebration Dinner): Ideal for special occasions, bringing our group together with other fellow cruisers on the first night.

With a mix of casual and formal dining options, we tailored our meals to our moods and discovered diverse culinary styles throughout the cruise. The crew's accommodation of my special dietary needs, even without pre-ordering, was truly commendable, with plenty of gluten-free options available.

Our journey began with a toast to our group's arrival with cocktails at the Encounter Bar, where we caught the excitement of the AFL Grand Final, Lions vs. Pies match. The electric atmosphere and flowing drinks made for a memorable afternoon, marking the perfect start to our cruise. These lively moments spent with friends and family are often the cruise's highlights, creating cherished memories.

As for the Pacific Encounter, it seamlessly blended our favorite features with exciting new ones. Splurging on a suite or mini-suite grants access to Byron Beach Club, a private retreat on the top deck, offering expansive views and superior service. Dining options with celebrity chef Luke Mangan at Luke's Bar & Grill add culinary delight to the experience. The Lobby on Deck 5 became our favorite hangout spot, offering a perfect vantage point to observe the ship's activities. For more vibrant nights, the Altitude nightclub on Deck 18 provided endless fun. Familiar favourites like Waterfront, Angelo's, and Dragon Lady continued to impress, while the new P&O Trattoria on Level 7 offered rustic Italian fare and freshly cooked pizza. The child-free Oasis and the chilled-out Ocean Bar provided relaxed alternatives, while the Encounter Hotel offered a classic pub experience. Evenings were enlivened with live entertainment and signature P&O production shows, including Blanc de Blanc. Our 3-night Comedy cruise featured hilarious performances, with the iconic Australian Comedian, Bob Down, delivering side-splitting humour.

Families would adore the dedicated indoor/outdoor family area, complete with a pool, family-focused fun, games, parties, and activities. Plus, the Twin Racer Waterslides were a hit with our younger passengers. Exploring the ship, we enjoyed quality family time playing games and were lucky enough to spot whales and dolphins near Fraser Island. Spectacular sunsets added to the magic of our voyage.

Cruising to the top of the world

Ever since I can remember, the allure of Norway and the enchanting Arctic Circle has called me. The chance to finally cross this magical destination off my bucket list presented itself when I decided to venture to the UK for the Eurovision Song Contest. What a perfect opportunity to intertwine my musical passions with my wanderlust! The prospect of this adventure was thrilling, but with so many choices and price points, the path wasn't immediately clear. Fate, however, had other plans for me – an irresistible offer from MSC Cruises was the key to unlock this Arctic dream.

Accompanied by my nineteen-year-old niece, the quest for a memorable journey began. Our previous escapade with MSC to the Mediterranean had etched fond memories in our minds, so it was only natural to explore their itineraries once again. The deal for a balcony cabin, complete with a drinks package and gratuities, fit seamlessly into our modest budget.

Our odyssey commenced in the heart of Hamburg at the charming NYCE Hotel Hamburg. The boutique gem offered spacious, comfortable rooms just a stone's throw from the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof station. Embracing the ease of a coach transfer from the station to the port, we embarked on this journey without a hitch. With return transfer tickets purchased and ready to be charged to our onboard account, we joined fellow travelers on the short bus ride to the Steinwerder cruise terminal, where our embarkation was a breeze.

As we stepped onto our home for the next 11 nights, the MSC Preziosa, a sense of déjà vu engulfed us – the vessel was a sister ship to the Fantasia, our previous cruising companion. With Swarovski-studded staircases that radiated Italian glamour, the ship's aura was magnetic. Though our boarding was at 11am and our cabin was yet to be accessible, we gleefully explored the ship. Skipping breakfast, we delved into a sumptuous buffet on deck 14, embodying MSC's Italian heritage with a plethora of culinary delights. Fresh pizzas, pastas, fish, meats, salads, and more, catered to every palate. A sunny interlude on the Garden Bar's deck 14 outdoor oasis, sipping classic cocktails, eased our transition into cruise mode. Wrapped in coats and boots, we embraced the chilly weather while awaiting cabin access. Around 2 pm, the moment arrived – our deck 13 cabin awaited. The large wardrobe allowed us to unpack our bags which was a nice change from living out of a suitcase and the small but functional bathroom had plenty of space for personal items. But it was the balcony that was the pièce de résistance – two chairs, a table, and a boundless view of the sea. A duo of fleece blankets awaited, ensuring cozy moments under the Northern sky.

The first two days were marked by open seas and exploration of the ship's wonders. Arriving at Maloy, a town steeped in maritime history, a RIB Boat Safari awaited us. Clad in dry suits, we sped across the waters toward the Stad Peninsula. Amid mist and seagulls, tales of Saint Sunniva and maritime lore enriched our journey. Our shipboard departure was serenaded by local musicians, embedding Maloy's spirit in our hearts.

Sailing toward Molde, snow-capped peaks greeted us at daybreak. A visit to the Romsdalsmuseet open-air village museum revealed Norway's heritage in charming homes and buildings. However, the pinnacle was the Atlantic Ocean Road – a scenic wonder of bridges and viaducts amidst the Arctic's splendor. Returning to the ship, cocktails on the sun deck wrapped us in the sun's embrace. Trondheim, a bustling university city, lured us with Nidaros Cathedral's awe-inspiring architecture. Quaint Old Town Bridge and its painted shops charmed us, reflecting the city's vibrancy.

Back on board the ship we set sail toward the Arctic Circle and watched our last sunset for the next couple of days. After a day at sea that saw us participating in Latin dance classes, reading, and, of course, indulging in culinary delights, we gathered on deck at midnight for the sunset that wasn’t. At 12.15am the sun dipped to hover just above the horizon before beginning its ascent back into the sky. With a late arrival into Honningsvag the next day we decided to hit the Galaxy Disco on deck 16 with its floor to ceiling windows and panoramic views. There’s something surreal about sipping cocktails and dancing in a nightclub in full daylight!

Docking at Honningsvag, the gateway to Europe's northernmost point, North Cape, marked the pinnacle of our journey. With 12 hours to explore, our adventure-filled day began with an exhilarating ATV tour. After a safety briefing at Destination 71 Degrees North, we delved into the hinterland, encountering stunning landscapes and informative insights from our guide about local fishing and Sami reindeer herding. A quick refuel with bites and hot chocolate prepared us for the second escapade: a coach ride to North Cape's iconic globe monument. As we reveled in clifftop vistas, the weather took a twist, enveloping the area in fog. A missed opportunity for the iconic Midnight Sun photo didn't dampen our spirits. Our return to Honningsvag was surprisingly clear, and a midnight sail rewarded us with a glimpse of a whale feeding in a bait ball. Tromso welcomed us with dampness, but the prospect of a husky farm adventure eclipsed the weather. Amidst excited canine cacophony, we immersed ourselves in muddy cuddles and name suggestions for a litter of puppies. The journey back unveiled an unexpected encounter – a couple of moose among clustered trees. Sailing from Tromso, a day at sea unveiled coastal beauty, leading to Alesund, our anticipated final port. Unfavorable weather hindered plans and intensified winds curtailed our speed. Disappointment ensued when the captain announced the cancellation of the Alesund call for safety reasons. The atmosphere onboard was understanding, appreciating the captain's efforts. Three sea days later, we arrived back in Hamburg, carrying a tinge of sadness for the missed Alesund fjord cruise but excitement for another chance to return to Norway.

SINGAPORE WITH RENEE

Singapore… all I can say is that this destination is AMAZING. I now understand why people can visit this city multiple times, there is just so much to see in this amazing vibrant destination that you need to return again and again. It’s not only a perfect stopover destination but you can stay for a week and still not see everything. Singapore awaits you, but before you jet on over have a read of Renee’s top tips.

Before you start, you need to have a good base for Accommodation. Look no further than my top hotel recommendation and that is Swissotel the Stamford. I stayed here in 2013 and it was fabulous. The location is the best with everything you could want at your doorstep; transport, supermarket, restaurants galore and what could be better than being connected to a shopping centre! The rooms are fabulous and large and all boast amazing views of the city. This hotel also offers a fabulous late check out option until 6pm, which allows you more time to explore the city before your evening flight home.

The Swissotel the Stamford is connected to the Raffles City Shopping center. On the lower level there is a market place supermarket that you can purchase anything you can imagine even including alcohol, however If you are a wine lover I would recommend bringing in your own duty free.

There are two locations in the raffles city shopping centre for food; on the lower level near the market place you can find food beyond your imagination. A great option if you do not wish to include breakfast in your hotel package. Ranging from Asian restaurants, Soup Place, Pizza, Deli France, Hamburgers….everything. Plus on the top level of this shopping centre is an AWESOME food court style dining. It offers all Asian style of food for cheap as chips ! Back in 2013 it was $4 a plate. Amazing quality and boy did we wish we had found it sooner than day 3.

City Hall MRT is the closest station to your hotel for the MRT. This is a really easy transport system. You simply find the station of where you wish to visit, go to the automated machines where you will insert coins or notes, then wait for the correct train and hop on board. I caught the MRT back from the shopping centre 313@ somsert and it was 2 stops and cost me $1.20.

However Taxi’s….are SO CHEAP. Honestly if you want to experience the MRT then do so, however it would be just as cheap and less hassle to catch taxi’s everywhere. I caught a taxi with 3 people from our hotel to of course another shopping centre which was 15minutes away and it only cost $5 for all of us.

Honestly these tours made our trip and are a MUST for everyone. However, you must book these before you depart. Most tours for Singapore depart in the morning or evening and if you have limited time you will not have time to book these when you arrive, plus you don’t want to plan your holiday whilst on your holiday so let me book them for you prior to your departure, trust me you will not be disappointed!

I could rattle on for hours talking about Singapore and all my top tips, but I can give you a full list with thorough detail before you depart on your next holiday.

However, to leave you with some taste testers of just some of the things to see & do in Singapore, my top picks are:

After visiting Vietnam in 2004 before it was a popular tourist destination I really wanted to visit again with my husband and family. This time as were travelling as a family we wanted to base ourselves in one location and the perfect place for this was beautiful Hoi An, which is located 1 hour from Danang International Airport. We flew direct into Danang from Singapore with Singapore Airlines, the trip was so easy and I highly recommend this option of flights as transiting in Singapore airport is always a great experience with lots to see and do and plenty of shops to pass the time by.

We stayed at Vinh Hung Riverside Resort and Spa and the location was perfect. We had a room overlooking the river from the front balcony and the rear entrance overlooked the pool, which of course had a swim up pool bar to keep everyone happy. One of the highlights was at Happy hour the resort provided an array of incredible nibbles to the point you barely needed to eat dinner each night! The resort also offered some great activities and the highlight for my children was the lantern making.

We did a walking food tour with Intrepid and I would highly recommend doing something like this, it was a great way to get our bearings of the local area and as food is such an important part of travelling for me it was great to experience places that I would never have gone too.

Roaming the streets of Hoi An is something else especially in the late afternoon and into the evening when it cools down and the streets are lit with lanterns. There is a beautiful vibe about the place and the shopping is great! One of our favourite places to eat was a restaurant called Morning Glory. It came recommended by a good friend and I must say it did not disappoint. We ate here multiple times and where never disappointed. The food was incredible and service was excellent.

A trip to Hoi An is not complete without visiting one of the many tailors in the old town. There are tailors on every corner. My suggestion is to have a plan of what you would like, some photos of what you would like made. My husband had a tailored suit made, I had a few items made. I took some clothing that I loved and asked them to replicate it, which they did to perfection

We did a couple of day trips while we were here and the first one was such a great day. We went to the Golden Hand Bridge at Ba Na Hills. We hired a driver for the day to take us here, it was about an hour drive from our resort. You have to get a cable car high up into the Hills to the Golden Hand bridge and it is spectacular & hard to believe how they build this where they did. After we visited the Golden Hand Bridge we went a bit further up to Sun World which is a theme park set even higher into the mountains. It was incredible and there was so much to see.

The next day trip we did was the ultimate highlight of our trip. We did a day trip with Vespa tours exploring local villages. We each had a Vespa with driver and totally went off the beaten track and explored local villages, met with locals, visited local homes . We didn’t feel like tourists visiting the touristy places we felt like we were exploring the real Vietnam. It was the most heart warming day and I would do it all over in heart beat given the chance.

As we had 8 nights in Hoi An we decided to split the trip into two experiences and changes hotels. After 4 nights we moved to a new hotel in a different part of the old town. We booked the 5 star spa resort called the Almanity. It had a completely different feel to our previous resort and was definitely a step up. The hotel rooms were built around the pool which was the star of the hotel. It was a beautiful resort and the highlight for me & my hubby was the daily 60 min spa treatment included in the rates. The Spa was incredible and I would highly recommend this. The hotel also offered daily yoga classes. I enjoyed our stay here and I would recommend this for couples or a group of ladies to stay here in the future. It wasn’t the ideal family resort but still definitely could work. It was a little further from the Old Town to walk than our previous hotel.

While we were here it was my son’s 7 ^th birthday so we hired a driver to take us about 30 min by car to VinPearl World. What a treat this was for my son! It was about $30 entry fee to VinPearl World Amusement park and talk about value for money! There was a Zoo, Amusement Park & Water Park. We could have spent a couple of days here. You can actually stay at the VinPearl Resort if you wanted a beach experience.

New Zealand - South Island

NEW ZEALAND - SOUTH ISLAND - SEPTEMBER 2022

In September, The Hartwig/Bliss families headed to the South Island for a 2 weeks road trip. The purpose of the trip initially was to celebrate Mum's 70th with the extended family in Queenstown but we decided to make the most of it and see as much as possible in the time we had. With most flights to Christchurch arriving late at night, we decided to stay at the Novotel at Christchurch Airport. It was so convenient , about a 20m walk from the Airport. We would highly recommend you stay here if you ever find yourself in the situation of a late arrival or early departure in Christchurch. The next morning we easily walked back to the terminal to organise our hire car which we had booked through Europcar. As there was 6 of us travelling we needed something quite large and I had booked a Kia Carnival. We were so lucky we got a brand new Kia Carnival. It was beautiful to drive and so comfortable and there was heaps of room for all our luggage!

Our first destination was Hamner Springs. The purpose was to just have a couple of days to relax as it is small sleepy little town with very little to do but it is so picturesque and I had fond memories of my visit here in 2009 that I wanted to bring the family here to show them. It is a beautiful, slightly windy drive from Christchurch that took about 1.5hrs but was so pretty with the stunning landscape changing regularly. It felt like we were in the Scottish Highlands at times. Upon arrival into Hamner we quickly got settled and headed to the Hamner Springs Thermal Pools. We spent all afternoon here, meandering our way between the different pools. It was so relaxing until we came across the waterslides which kept my 10 year old son entertained for hours! We got a 2 day pass which I highly recommend doing as we headed back again the next morning for a few hours. By now, we were well & truly in holiday mode and I can't recommend enough how perfect heading to Hamner was to begin our 2 week road trip!

From Hamner we headed back through Christchurch and met up with my old London roommate Sharon who is the most passionate Christchurcher I know. She gave us a fabulous walking tour of Christchurch city and gave us a great insight into the city since the earthquakes. There has been so much rebuilding and it is still continuing to this day. We had a fabulous few hours but we decided next time we would spent a day or two here as there is so much more to be seen. It is really a beautiful city with Hagley Park & the Botanical Gardens a real highlight for me. We then continued onto the stunning village of Akoroa for another 2 nights of more relaxing and to to take in the stunning views. Akoroa would have to be one of my favourite places purely based on how picturesque it is! There are loads of hikes or tramps as the Kiwis like to say in this area and we decided to do a fairly easy walk to the Onawe Peninsula. It was a pretty easy hour long walk and we got so lucky with the weather, the day was spectacular and the views were as always breathtaking. We were able to get some fresh salmon from the trawler and it simply melted in our mouths!

After Akoroa we were headed south to meet the rest of the family in Queenstown. We had two short days of travelling to get there , we broke the trip in Lake Tekapo . We stayed at the Mantra Lake Tekapo in a 3 bedroom apartment, it was super spacious and very conveniently located to the Lake and town amenities. We decided to go for a short drive to the Mt. John Observatory which overlooks the township and the alps. It was well worth the $8 National Park entry fee. We spent quite some time here walking around and soaking up the spectacular views. With the snow capped mountains in the backdrop, need I say it , was stunning!

The next day we headed to Queenstown where we were reunited with our extended family for the next 7 days. With my sisters and their families living in NSW we haven't had the opportunity to see each other as much as usual over the past few years so it was really lovely to reconnect and spent time together in such a beautiful location. We purchased a 3 day lift pass and spent 3 days skiing at both Coronet Peak & the Remarkables. The Remarkables was our favourite ski field even though it was a bit more a journey from Queenstown, we felt it was worth it though. The runs were better and so was the snow. So much fun was had here and plenty of lifetime memories and busters created for sure. A family tradition we have is when we are all together my parents babysit the grandkids and us "kids" and partners go out for a nice dinner. Upon recommendation we pre-booked well in advance, "Blue Kanu". Wow! From the street, it didn't look anything fancy but once you walked in, there was definitely a WOW factor. The cuisine was a mix of Asia + Pacific cuisine, that they like to call it Polynasia! We decided to do the set menu & I can tell you it did not disappoint. The food was sensational and the service was the best I have had. The restaurant was booked out and it had such an amazing vibe. We would definitely go back here next time we visit Queenstown.

After Queenstown, we said good bye to the extended family and headed off on our own for our final 2 nights to tick of Milford Sound. We drove a further 2 hours south to the lovely town ship of Te Anau . The day we arrived we had booked in to do the Glow Worm caves which was a great few hours. We got catamaran across the lake to explore the glow worm caves. It was heaps of fun and again we got lucky with the weather. It usually rains or is overcast in this past of NZ but the sun was shining and it was glorious! The next day we did the slow drive down to Milford Sound, it was about 1.5 hours each way . We reached Milford Sound and headed off on our cruise to explore the Sound. Yet again, we totally got lucky with the weather. It was a crystal clear day, in fact I would go as far as saying it was just magical. We all loved it and said it was definitely a highlight of our trip.

Thank you NZ for turning on the weather for us. We loved it. While it was still cold, it was pleasant and we had such a great time. What we kept saying was how close to NZ is to our home in Australia but how very different it is. We will definitely be back to explore more of this beautiful country.

In case of theft while traveling or simply bad luck, you may find yourself in need of a replacement passport, which is much easier when you’ve got some identification to provide.

Print out a hard copy of your passport and driver’s license and keep them separate from your actual passport. Upload a digital copy to a secure online location, like Dropbox or Google Drive, and share it with a trusted friend or relative.

BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE
Travel Insurance is a must-have for travel safety! It protects you in case of a medical emergency or theft. It even covers the cost of your trip if you have to cancel it or end it early for a covered reason, like a death in your immediate family or sudden illness.

KEEP YOUR MONEY IN MULTIPLE LOCATIONS, AND ALWAYS HAVE AN EMERGENCY CREDIT CARD
Never, EVER travel with all your money in one location! We stash emergency money and debit & credit cards throughout our luggage and on our bodies ( Perhaps invest in a moneybelt!) in separate pockets.

DON’T USE YOUR PHONE ON A CITY BUS, TRAIN, OR WHILE WALKING DOWN THE STREET
Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did.

Buses and trains that are frequently stopping to let people on and off are hotbeds of phone theft. It’s easy for an opportunistic thief to snatch the phone out of your hand and bolt for the door, disappearing before you even realise what just happened.

KEEP VALUABLES ON YOU AT ALL TIMES WHILE IN TRANSIT

We’ve heard too many stories about a checked bag or a bag hidden away under a bus getting rifled through or even lost!

So when we travel on a train, bus, or plane, we pull out all of our electronics, important documents, and other valuables, and keep them on us in a locked bag that we never let out of our sight or off our person.

KNOW WHAT YOU CAN AND CANNOT EAT AND DRINK

The last thing you want is a case of food poisoning. In some countries it’s safe to drink the tap water, in others it’s not (even if the locals do).

Street food is delicious, but rather buy from a vendor who is preparing the food then and there, instead of purchasing a chicken kebab that has been sitting in the sun for the past day.

You’ll have a better trip knowing that you’re well-prepared and taking precautions for your trip. Now, all that’s left to do it is sit back, relax and have the experience of a lifetime!

All your travel information with flight, hotel and car reservations plus all other documents. You may need to show these when you enter another country.

For filling out immigration and customs forms.

MEDICATION

Daily medications and vitamins. Anything you might need to take daily, plus any prescription meds.

To make things more comfortable

EYE DROPS
Aircraft cabins are low humidity environments and eye drops are soothing balm for that scratchy, red-eye feeling.

Your own personal dark space for that refreshing power nap.

HAND SANITISER
Even if the aircraft looks clean, give yourself a squirt before meals.

FACE WIPES
A little in-seat self pampering goes a long way.

HEADPHONES

Noise-reducing cut aircraft noise to a whisper, but even the in-ear items provide a quality listening experience. You might need an adapter to fit the on-board entertainment system outlet port.

TOILETRIES

Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant and moisturiser. Whatever you need to get you through an overnight stay.

TIPS FOR SURVIVING YOUR LONG HAUL FLIGHT

Whether you're taking a flight to Fiji or embarking on a 19-hour journey to Europe, lengthy flights can be boring, uncomfortable, and exhausting. The nuisances of long-haul travel can range in severity from the mildly inconvenient (annoying seatmates) to the downright dangerous (deep-vein thrombosis is no joke), and a poorly planned journey can be enough to not only ruin your day, but a few more afterward, too. Luckily, there are some easy ways to make a long flight infinitely more bearable.

Book your tickets early

This should go without saying. The earlier you book, the better your chances of scoring your favourite seat.

Sit in the back

Just in case you don't have a favourite seat (or the ones in the front with all the legroom are taken), go for the back. It'll be noisier, sure, but if everyone else is scrambling for the front, you've got a far better chance of ending up with an empty seat or two beside you.

Prepare for jet lag

There are several things you can do before your flight to help avoid jet lag or at least reduce it. Spend the days before your flight adjusting your sleep patterns (a few 4 a.m. or 7 p.m. bedtimes should do it, depending on what time of day you'll be flying). You can also book your flight so that it arrives during the day, make the most of your stopovers, and, most importantly, be well rested before you fly.

Don't overdo the carry-ons

You'll need more for a long-haul flight than you would for a short one, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to overpack. Keep the essentials in your personal item so they're always within arm's reach.

Buckle your seat belt over your blanket

If you plan to sleep at all during your flight, make sure your buckled seat belt is visible. In case of turbulence, the seat belt light will turn on, and flight crew may come around the cabin to check that everyone is buckled up. If you're buckled beneath your blanket where they can't see it, they will wake you up to check.

Dress comfortably

Keep it loose and comfortable — you're not here to impress anyone. Remember to bring layers for when it gets cold — a cardigan or sweatshirt is always good to have on hand.

Stay healthy

Sitting in a cramped metal tube for the better part of a day (or more) is not good for you. Fight off dehydration and deep-vein thrombosis — your two biggest enemies in the sky — by regularly drinking water, stretching, and walking around the cabin.

Pack lots of activities for your kids

Traveling with kids? Make sure to pack plenty of activities to keep them entertained throughout the flight. Bring gaming systems, iPads preloaded with their favourite shows (and headphones), colouring and sticker books, and more, and don't forget their favourite snacks.
