Experience the culture of Japan with Collette

There's a reason Japan is climbing higher on so many travellers' bucket lists.

From ancient temples and peaceful gardens to neon-lit cities and world-famous cuisine, Japan is a country that effortlessly blends centuries-old traditions with modern innovation.

Recently, our very own Bernie and his wife Brenda had the opportunity to experience Japan on a guided tour with Collette, and they've returned with plenty of stories—and even more reasons to recommend this incredible destination.

One of the things Bernie enjoyed most was that the tour wasn't simply about ticking famous landmarks off a list.

"It really felt like we were experiencing Japan, not just looking at it."

Throughout the journey, there were opportunities to connect with local people, learn about Japanese traditions and take part in experiences that simply wouldn't be possible if travelling independently.

From participating in a sushi-making class to sharing a private tea ceremony with a monk, every day offered something memorable.

Discovering the many sides of Japan

The tour began in the vibrant city of Tokyo, where towering skyscrapers sit alongside peaceful shrines and traditional neighbourhoods.

Exploring the famous Ginza district showcased Japan's modern energy before travelling to Hakone for a completely different experience—a scenic cruise across Lake Ashi surrounded by spectacular mountain views.

Travelling deeper into the Japanese Alps, Bernie and Brenda visited Matsumoto Castle before wandering through the beautifully preserved streets of Takayama, where traditional wooden buildings and local markets offered a glimpse into Japan's past.

One of the standout experiences was visiting the UNESCO World Heritage village of Shirakawa-go, famous for its distinctive thatched-roof farmhouses that have stood for generations.

Culture you can truly experience

Some of the most memorable moments came from the cultural experiences built into the tour.

Rather than simply watching from the sidelines, Bernie and Brenda were invited to become part of the experience.

Learning the centuries-old art of gold leaf decorating, taking part in a traditional sushi-making class and enjoying a Maiko performance in Kyoto all provided meaningful insight into Japanese culture.

These hands-on experiences transformed the journey into something much more personal.

Travelling the Japanese way

No visit to Japan would be complete without experiencing the famous Shinkansen.

Travelling aboard the iconic bullet train wasn't simply a way to get from one city to another—it was an experience in itself.

Fast, comfortable and remarkably efficient, it gave Bernie and Brenda another appreciation for the way Japan seamlessly blends innovation with everyday life.

Reflecting on history

The tour also included visits to some of Japan's most significant historical sites.

Walking through Hiroshima Peace Memorial and visiting the iconic Itsukushima Shrine offered moments of quiet reflection that balanced the excitement of the bustling cities.

These experiences provided a deeper understanding of Japan's resilience, history and culture.

Every detail taken care of

One of the biggest advantages of touring with Collette is the ease of travelling.

Accommodation, transport, sightseeing and many meals are included, allowing travellers to simply enjoy each destination without worrying about logistics.

For Bernie and Brenda, this meant they could focus on soaking up every experience—from enjoying Hida beef paired with local sake to exploring Kyoto's beautiful temples and historic streets.

Thinking about Japan?

If Japan has been sitting on your travel wish list, Bernie would love to share his firsthand experience and answer any questions you have about travelling with Collette.

Having recently experienced the tour himself, he can offer practical tips, personal recommendations and insights that only come from being there.

Whether you're dreaming of cherry blossom season, exploring ancient temples or tasting authentic Japanese cuisine, now is a wonderful time to start planning.
